A BC Island property needed additional water capacity to mitigate summer drought conditions. This property has an existing storage infrastructure with a 12,000 L cistern and a seasonal shallow well (dry or low-yeilding during the summer).
The residents' goal was to add additional low-cost food grade storage and to reduce the amount of interaction they required to fill and use the stored water. We deployed a simple storage and filtration system, using our modular DIY packages. This system is appropriate for use in a single family dwelling.
- 10,000L Flexible Bulk Storage: We deployed one 10,000L potable TPU material storage tank to add capacity to the existing system. Each 10,000L unit requires 8' x 20' level and prepared ground - this ensures room to walk around the bags. The bladder tank is set up on 20mil HDPE pond liner and covered with sacrificial tarps to prevent light ingress and UV degradation.
- Shallow Well Recovery Controller: Using our DIY automation kit, shallow well recovery can be maximized and automated by automatically keeping the level as low as possible; the inflow is repeatedly pumped to storage through a filter.
- Primary Pre-Filtration: High quality winter shallow well water is pumped through a disposable cartridge filter. This removes particulates and ensures lower Total Organic Carbon before going to bulk storage.
- Sanitization: TPU material is not compatible with hypochlorite. The stored water is pumped as needed into the existing cistern system for sanitization. To sanitize the water, a dosing system ("DIY Bleach Buddy") injects hypochlorite to make a 3-5 ppm final solution with sufficient contact time.
-
Point-of-Use Polishing: As water is used it passes through an activated carbon block filter ("DIY Bleach Destroyer") to scrub and neutralize residual chlorine.
This reserve provides a reliable water supply for the residents, and has been in use for 10 months. This demonstrates effectiveness of Pelican Water's automated, modular storage and simplified treatment systems- showing that property owners can execute their own localized water scarcity response plan.
